As YOu can see this story is indeed Copyrighted, so please no copying.
This story is actually inspired by a script my friend and I wrote together, I've been trying to get her on the site, and she's trying. Anyways, it's different from the script because, I um... couldn't find my copy and I changed the characters and stuff, but the ending is the same. ENJOY!
Mr. Williams was at his desk scribbling words onto pieces of parchment for the class, as I attempted to sneak into his class room. My alarm clock never went off, because of a power shortage we had in the middle of the night, due to my little brother and his friends.
"Late for my class again, I see. Well Miss Evans, this is your second tardy, one more and you get three detentions." Mr. Williams said without looking up from his chicken scratch on the paper.
"I know, I'm sorry, but I-" I began to say.
"No excuses Miss Evans. Now take your seat I have a new assignment for everyone." He walked to the front of the class room infront of the white board, on which odd pictures were drawn. (Doodles from the seniors in the class before mine.) "Now Children, I mean... 'Young adults'." He began laughing. "I'm sorry, I can't say that with a straight face! Anyways, I have a very interesting assignment I'm sure you'll all enjoy."
Mr. Williams began passing around the pieces of paper. His assignments were normally fun. I mean, he's the English teacher, and English is my favorite subject, so I do enjoy his assignments for the most part.
"Class, I've thought up of something fun," He began saying as he still passed the paper to everyone. "I've written on these papers town mysteries, that I'm sure most of you know. Your job for Christmas Break is to attempt to figure out the truth to these mysteries. You may not know it, but your little town has had some great things happen in it. Both famous and infamous.
"Now this assignment will take some research, but I'm sure the thrill of the project will keep you going." He looked at me, "Why just ask Miss, 'Nancy Drew' over here, she's always reading those horror mystery books."
He handed me my paper as the bell rang, so I didn't get to look at it. "Now class, enjoy break, and get investigating!"
Everyone ran out of the room, I walked out. I wanted to read the paper, but I feared if I did I would miss my bus. I packed my books, math and english were the only assignments I had. I ran to the bus, nearly late, and sat with my friend Victoria. Victoria, another English Enthusiast, was looking at her paper.
"I got 'The Legend of Old Mrs. Jankins', you know the lady who was living in that old house on Old Mill Road. Did you know they found five dead bodies in her yard and eight in her basement? Creepy. So Elizabeth, what did you get?"
I unfolded my piece of paper and began screaming, nearly breaking into tears. It couldn't have been what saw on the paper. I picked it up and looked again. But upon my second glance of the paper, it was! "The murder of Ava Winston"!
"What is it?! What's wrong?!" Tori (Victoria's nickname), yelled over my blood curtling scream. She bent down and picked the paper up. She looked at it, and hugged me.
I sat there staring at the computer screen. Looking at the newspaper stories about my dead cousin. It sickened me. Tears began to roll down my pale smooth cheeks. "I can't take this." I said out loud standing up from my computer chair.
I looked around the living room, looking for something to do, I finally decided on sitting on the couch looking at my new issue of Cute Girl Magazine. I opened it up to the front page story, another celebrity pregnant, and is an unfit mother. God, these celebs need to stop procreating, now. Suddenly the phone rang, startling me, and causing me to drop the magazine. "Hello?"
"Hey Liz, it's Tori."
"Oh hey Tori, how are you."
"Good, I was wondering if you wanted to help me with my project. I thought you could come over here, and we could go check out Mrs. Jankins' old house. It's been abandoned for like fifteen years, and the police don't check the house ever. So, do you want to go?"
I thought about it for a second of two, "Sure, I have nothing better to do."
"Good because I was hoping we could take your car, because mine is like almost out of gas. I can't afford gas anymore."
"I would, but it's in the shop, something about my breaks nearly going. I guess, I was four red lights away from dying or something like that. But I'd be happy to chip in for gas," I lied.
"So, I guess I'll have to take the bus, unless you pick me up?"
"I would, but I don't think I have enough gas to go from my house to your house and then to the nearest gas station." Tori attempted to explain to me.
"That's fine, I'll just get on the bus. See you soon."
"Bye." Tori said as she hung up.
I got up, grabbed my purse, put on my jacket and walked out of the house, locking the door behind me.
The bus ride was somewhat long, because there was like no one on the bus, until I saw Mr. Williams walking into the bus. He saw me and sat down next to me. "Hello Ms. Evans."
I saw him and it made me think of the English assignment. I couldn't hold back my feelings anymore. "Mr. Williams I need to talk to you."
"Go ahead and speak."
"Mr. Williams, it's about my English assignment. I can't do it."
He looked at me as if he was upset. "What's the excuse this time Ms. Evans? Your little break the computer? Or did you're brother eat the computer. You know if you don't feel like doing it just tell me the truth, I hate it when you kids lie to me like that! Why don't you just fess up to everything and I'll just give you a zero!"
"It's not that at all. It's just that-"
"What is it Elizabeth? What type of poor excuse are you going to give me now?!"
"Ava Winston was my cousin!" I screamed, nearly breaking into tears. "She was one of my best friends and my cousin!"
He looked at me agian, this time with compassion. "Liz, I appologize. I didn't know. I guess I could give you something else." He stared off into nothing, "I just thought it would be perfect for you. You love to read those mystery novels and I thought you'd like to solve a real life mystery."
I sat there thinking. I could solve her murder. I could figure out who really killed my dear, dead cousin. I could be like a real life Nancy Drew, and make my Aunt Tammy happy for once. Just maybe.
"Well, Ms. Evans, I guess I'll have to come up with something else for you."
"No!" I stopped him, "I've changed my mind. Let me finish this project, at least for my self of mind." The bus stopped. I looked at the name of the street, and realized I needed to get off the bus. It was Tori's street. "Well, have a good day Mr. Williams."
I walked up the side walk thinking about solving Ava's murder. I could really bring my cousin's death to rest. Put that heartless murderer where they belong.
Before I knew it, I was in front of Victoria's house. She was already waiting at the door, ready for me. She walked out of the front door, with her golden straight hair swaying from side to side. "Come on girl, Mrs. Jankin's mansion is only a little down the street."
We got in the car and we were at the house before I knew it. "We're here." Victoria said putting the car in park and turning off the engine. "Can you believe it, over a dozen murders have occured. It is so creepy."
"Yeah, let's go in, I'm so excited!" I said. I couldn't help but feel like I was one of the main characters from one of my novels. My heart was pounding, and I was giddy.
"I can't believe you're excited about going into a house where people I have DIED. They're dead. D- E- A- D, dead. You're so freaky."
"That's the reason why you're my friend. You embrace my freakiness. You seem to behumble me for my freakiness. Thank you."
She looked as me as though I was from a different planet. "You really are a freak."
"Thanks." We laughed a little bit, and made our way up the old cement stairs. The poarched creeked as we stepped on it. The door knob squeeked as we turned it, and the door creeked worse than the poarch. When we walked in we both immediatly decieded to go upstairs. Of course we wnet to the master bedroom first.
"I'll race you there Liz."
"You're on." We were racing. Let's just say that Tori, the track star, beat me by a lot. She opened the door when I caught up to her. She pused the door and we walked in. We both started screaming at what was hanging from the ceiling.
My terror rose suddenly as I saw the body hanging from the ceiling fan. I was screaming so loud that I am sure I made Tori deaf in right ear. I looked at her to see if she was okay, but she was laughing.
"I got you good Liz!" She said through her whail of laughter. Tears were streaming down her eyes she was laughing so hard. I was so angry at her I can't even describe it. "Are you alright Elizabeth, you look really pale."
I couldn't control my self any longer. I tackled her to the ground. "Why would you do that to me!" I screamed at her.
"Liz calm down!" She shreiked from under me. "It was only a joke!"
"That's not funny!" I slapped her across her face. She looked stunned. Then she started laughing again. I don't know what was so funny. I was ready to kill her and she was laughing. Something was wrong with this picture.
"I guess I deserved that." She laughed out again.
"Damn right you deserved it. I nearly had a heart attack."
"I'm sorry Liz. Now could you get off of me, I really can't breath with you sitting on my diaphram." I stood up and stummbled over my friend on the ground.
"Are we going to explore this house or not?" I asked Liz, who was crawling up from the ground. Tears were streaming down her cheek from laughing so hard.
"Liz, I've checked out every room in building... except for the basement. You wanna check it out?" She walked over to the door way and started to head down the stairs as if she knew my answer.
I stood at the top of the stairs looking at her. "Is this another trick to scare me?"
"No. You know I hate basements, and I won't go in one unless you're there." She walked to the kitchen and then turned left. She knew where the basement was simply because all the houses in this area of town were built the exact same way.
"Okay. But I hate basements as much as you do." I ran up to her. She already had the door open and was staring into the dark basement. "Are you going to turn the light on?"
"That's what I was looking for. There's no switch." Her eyes suddenly got really big. Her breathing increased and she looked possitively terrified. "Liz, what if... What if you have to pull the switch inside the basement?"
"What makes you think that the electricity is even on in this place?"
"Well I know Old Mrs. Jankins' grandson, William Tyler Jankins, pays the bills on this place. He comes by once a week and gets the bills."
"How do you know this?"
"Well, I've seen him. Not really him, because he never gets out of his car when he gets the mail and his windows are tinted. But my older brother said that was who did that."
"Okay. Well, I guess we have to go down there in the dark." We started off down the stairs. The stairs creaked and the rail on the stair case was extremely unstable. My heart began pounding, I hated basements. We finally reached the bottom of the stairs, which felt like a lifetime, and I looked over at where I supposed Tori was. "Victoria?"
"Yeah?"
"Feel around for a light switch." As we felt around I walked into a wall. As I felt the wall I touched something that felt like paper. Suddenly the lights came on. "Tori you found a light-" I saw pictures infornt of me. Pictures of everyone in the town. "Tori, look."
She walked over to me. And looked at the pictures. We were looking at everyone in town. So many peopled lived in our town and everyone one of them were on this wall!
"Liz! Look there is writing on each picture!" She pointed to red chicken scratch on the bottom of each picture. I looked at the picture of Tori was pointing at. It was of Judge Samuels, a retired old man who used to be one of the most influental people in this part of the state. He used to lock up anyone who he thought was guilty of anything, which was sometimes bad because it was no secret that he did not like anyone who was not white. African Americans, Hispanics, Orientals and Jews, he discriminated against everyone. Now he's a bitter old man who blames a local family of a different race for the death of his wife.
I looked at the writing on it. Demon to Everyone was there. I suddenly realized Old Mrs. Jankins judged everyone in town. I quickly looked for my picture, if it was there. I found it and realized something, Ava's picture was next to mine, and it had an "X" over it. I read mine quickly, Cruel was written on it. I went to see what was written on Ava's when I looked out the tiny basement window and saw someone looking at me. I screamed.
It was a man, and he grabbed a brick and began hitting it against the window. It shattered almost instantly. He began to attempt to crawl through. Tori and I began to scream. She ran up the stairs and I started to follow. But I stopped. Ava's Picture.
I ran to the picture of Ava and grabbed it from the wall. The man was almost completely through the window. I ran up the stairs and grabbed the railing. Suddenly, it gave way and I fell.
